What Are Sounds?
Introduction to phonemes - understanding that words are made of individual sounds that can be heard and identified.
Objective: Students will understand that words are made up of individual sounds and will begin to hear sounds separately from whole words.30 minutes - 2
Beginning Sounds
Learn to isolate initial sounds in words, starting with continuant consonants that can be stretched.
Objective: Students will isolate and identify the initial (first) sound in words, beginning with continuant consonants (/m/, /s/, /f/, /n/).30 minutes - 3
More Beginning Sounds
Expand initial sound isolation to include stop consonants (/b/, /d/, /t/, /p/, /k/, /g/) and practice with varied initial sounds.
Objective: Students will isolate initial sounds in words including both continuant and stop consonants.30 minutes - 4
Ending Sounds
Learn to isolate final sounds in words, starting with continuant consonants that can be stretched at the end.
Objective: Students will isolate and identify the final (last) sound in words, beginning with continuant consonants (/m/, /s/, /f/, /n/).30 minutes - 5
More Ending Sounds
Expand final sound isolation to include stop consonants and practice with minimal pairs.
Objective: Students will isolate final sounds in words including both continuant and stop consonants, using minimal pairs to build precision.30 minutes - 6
Beginning vs. Ending
Rapidly switch between identifying initial and final sounds to build flexible positional awareness.
Objective: Students will fluently switch between identifying initial and final sounds when asked about either position.30 minutes - 7
Middle Sounds Introduction
Introduce isolating medial vowel sounds in CVC words, focusing on high-contrast short vowels /a/ and /i/.
Objective: Students will isolate and identify the middle (medial) vowel sound in CVC words, distinguishing between high-contrast short vowels /a/ and /i/.30 minutes - 8
Review and Practice
Consolidate all phoneme isolation skills across positions through mixed practice, games, self-assessment, and checkpoint preparation.
Objective: Students will demonstrate mastery of phoneme isolation by identifying initial, medial, and final sounds in CVC words through mixed practice and game-based review.30 minutes
