What Your Child Will Learn
- 1
Initial Sounds in Complex Words
Isolate initial phonemes in words with consonant blends and digraphs.
Objective: Students will isolate the initial phoneme in words with blends and digraphs, distinguishing between the first sound and the blend/digraph as a whole.25 minutes - 2
Final Sounds in Complex Words
Isolate final phonemes in words with consonant blends and digraphs at the end.
Objective: Students will isolate the final phoneme in words with ending blends and digraphs.25 minutes - 3
Medial Vowel Sounds in CVC Words
Isolate and identify medial vowel sounds in consonant-vowel-consonant words.
Objective: Students will isolate and identify the medial (middle) vowel sound in CVC words with 80% accuracy.25 minutes - 4
Discriminating Short Vowel Sounds
Distinguish between easily confused short vowel sounds, especially /e/ vs /i/ and /o/ vs /u/.
Objective: Students will accurately discriminate between commonly confused short vowel pairs (/e/ vs /i/, /o/ vs /u/) with 80% accuracy.25 minutes - 5
Phoneme Isolation in CCVC and CVCC Words
Isolate phonemes in four-sound words with initial or final blends.
Objective: Students will isolate any phoneme (first, second, third, or fourth) in four-sound words with consonant blends.25 minutes - 6
Phoneme Isolation with Digraphs
Isolate phonemes in words containing digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh, ng, ck), recognizing digraphs as single sounds.
Objective: Students will correctly count and isolate phonemes in words with digraphs, treating each digraph as one sound.25 minutes - 7
Same and Different Sound Comparisons
Compare words to identify which sounds are the same and which are different.
Objective: Students will compare pairs of words to identify which position (initial, medial, or final) has a different sound.25 minutes - 8
Phoneme Isolation Review and Application
Review all phoneme isolation skills and apply them to prepare for the checkpoint.
Objective: Students will demonstrate mastery of all phoneme isolation skills (initial, medial, final; CVC, CCVC, CVCC; blends, digraphs) with 80% accuracy.25 minutes
