What Your Child Will Learn
- 1
Consonant Sounds 1: s, m, t
Learn the sounds that the letters s, m, and t make, with emphasis on continuous sounds that are easier to blend.
Objective: Students will produce the correct sound for the letters s, m, and t, and match these letters to their sounds in isolation and in initial position.45 minutes - 2
Consonant Sounds 2: p, n, f
Learn the sounds for consonants p, n, and f. Practice distinguishing between continuous sounds (n, f) and stop sounds (p). Begin simple blending with known letters.
Objective: Students will produce the correct sound for the letters p, n, and f, and begin to blend simple CVC patterns using all six consonants learned.45 minutes - 3
Short A
Learn the short /a/ sound as in 'apple'. Read CVC words with the -at and -am word families using known consonants.
Objective: Students will produce the short /a/ sound, identify it in spoken words, and decode CVC words in the -at and -am word families.45 minutes - 4
Short I
Learn the short /i/ sound as in 'itch'. Read CVC words with the -it and -in word families. Contrast short /i/ with short /a/.
Objective: Students will produce the short /i/ sound, distinguish it from short /a/, and decode CVC words in the -it and -in word families.45 minutes - 5
More Consonants: b, c, d, g
Learn the sounds for consonants b, c (hard), d, and g (hard). These are all stop sounds. Build more CVC words with expanded consonant set.
Objective: Students will produce the correct sounds for b, c (hard), d, and g (hard), and use these consonants to read additional CVC words.45 minutes - 6
Short O and U
Learn the short /o/ and /u/ sounds. Read CVC words with all four short vowels learned (a, i, o, u). Sort and contrast vowel sounds.
Objective: Students will produce the short /o/ and /u/ sounds, distinguish them from each other and from previously learned vowels (/a/, /i/), and decode CVC words using all four vowels.45 minutes - 7
Reading CVC Words
Blend all CVC patterns using all learned sounds. Build fluency through word chains, speed drills, and simple decodable sentences.
Objective: Students will decode CVC words with all learned vowels (a, i, o, u) and consonants with increasing speed and accuracy, and read simple decodable sentences.45 minutes - 8
Review and Application
Consolidate all PH-1 letter-sound skills. Read connected decodable text using only learned patterns. Practice fluency with word lists and sentences. Develop self-correction strategies. Celebrate progress and preview PH-2 (digraphs).
Objective: Students will demonstrate mastery of all PH-1 letter-sounds by reading word lists fluently, decoding connected decodable text, and using self-correction strategies when errors occur.45 minutes
