What Your Child Will Learn
- 1
Digraph SH
Learn that the letters S and H together make the single sound /sh/. Practice reading and spelling words with sh at the beginning and end.
Objective: Students will recognize that sh is a digraph (two letters making one sound) and accurately read and spell words with sh in initial and final positions.45 minutes - 2
Digraphs CH and TH
Learn two more digraphs: ch makes /ch/ and th makes /th/ (voiced and unvoiced). Practice distinguishing between sh, ch, and th.
Objective: Students will recognize and read words with the ch and th digraphs, distinguishing between voiced and unvoiced th, and contrast ch with previously learned sh.45 minutes - 3
More Digraphs: WH and CK
Complete the digraph set with wh (typically /w/) and ck (/k/ after short vowels). Review all five digraphs: sh, ch, th, wh, ck.
Objective: Students will recognize and read words with the wh and ck digraphs, understand that ck appears only after short vowels, and review all five consonant digraphs.45 minutes - 4
Initial Blends with L
Learn consonant blends where you hear BOTH sounds: bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl. Understand the difference between blends (2 sounds) and digraphs (1 sound).
Objective: Students will decode words beginning with L-blends (bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl), understanding that blends contain two sounds that are blended smoothly together.45 minutes - 5
Initial Blends with R
Learn consonant blends ending with R: br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr. Practice smooth blending without inserting schwa sounds.
Objective: Students will decode words beginning with R-blends (br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr), blending smoothly and distinguishing R-blends from L-blends.45 minutes - 6
Initial Blends with S
Learn consonant blends beginning with S: sc, sk, sm, sn, sp, st, sw. S-blends are among the most common blends in English and appear in many high-frequency words.
Objective: Students will decode words beginning with S-blends (sc, sk, sm, sn, sp, st, sw), sort words by their S-blend, and read decodable sentences containing mixed S-blends.45 minutes - 7
Final Blends
Apply blend knowledge to word endings. Learn final blends nd, ng, nk, nt, mp, and ft in the CVCC pattern, with attention to articulating both sounds at word end.
Objective: Students will decode words ending with final blends (nd, ng, nk, nt, mp, ft), articulating both consonant sounds clearly and distinguishing between similar blends like ng and nk.45 minutes - 8
Review and Application
Consolidate all digraph and blend skills through mixed word reading, connected text, dictation, error analysis, and targeted reteaching. Prepare for PH-2 checkpoint.
Objective: Students will accurately read words with digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh, ck) and blends (L-blends, R-blends, S-blends, final blends) in isolation and connected text, discriminating between digraph and blend patterns.45 minutes
