What Your Child Will Learn
- 1
Vowel Teams Introduction
Understand that two vowels can work together as a team to make one sound.
Objective: Students will identify vowel teams in words and understand that two vowels work together to make one long vowel sound.45 minutes - 2
AI and AY
Learn the two vowel teams that make the long a sound and understand when to use each one.
Objective: Students will read and spell words with ai and ay vowel teams, understanding that ai appears in the middle of words and ay appears at the end.45 minutes - 3
EE and EA
Learn the two common vowel teams that make the long e sound.
Objective: Students will read words with ee and ea vowel teams, recognizing that both typically make the long e sound.45 minutes - 4
OA and OW
Learn the two vowel teams that make the long o sound: oa in the middle and ow at the end.
Objective: Students will read and spell words with oa and ow vowel teams, understanding that oa appears in the middle and ow (long o) appears at the end of words.45 minutes - 5
OO Sounds
Learn that the vowel team oo can make two different sounds: long oo (moon) and short oo (book).
Objective: Students will read words with oo, recognizing that it makes two different sounds (long oo as in moon and short oo as in book) and use context to determine the correct pronunciation.45 minutes - 6
OU and OW Diphthongs
Learn that ou and ow can make a gliding 'ow' sound (as in 'cloud' and 'cow'), and distinguish this from the long o 'ow' pattern (as in 'snow').
Objective: Students will read words with ou and ow diphthongs, producing the gliding /ow/ sound, and distinguish between ow as a diphthong (cow) and ow as long o (snow).45 minutes - 7
Mixed Vowel Teams
Apply all vowel team patterns (ai, ay, ee, ea, oa, ow, oo, ou) in mixed reading practice with sorting activities and decodable sentences.
Objective: Students will accurately read words containing any vowel team pattern learned in PH-4, using the strategy of identifying the vowel team, recalling its sound, and blending the word.45 minutes - 8
Review and Application
Consolidate all vowel team patterns through fluency-focused reading, dictation, error analysis, and celebration of growth.
Objective: Students will read connected text containing all vowel team patterns fluently, spell vowel team words accurately through dictation, and identify and correct vowel team errors.45 minutes
