What Your Child Will Learn

  1. 1

    Common Suffixes: -s, -ed, -ing

Learn to read words with inflectional endings that show grammatical changes.

Objective: Students will identify base words and read words with inflectional suffixes -s, -ed, and -ing accurately.
    45 minutes
  2. 2

    More Suffixes: -er, -est, -ly

Learn to read words with comparative endings and the adverb suffix -ly.

Objective: Students will read words with -er, -est, and -ly suffixes and understand how these suffixes change word meaning.
    45 minutes
  3. 3

    Prefixes: un-, re-, pre-

Learn to read words with common prefixes that change word meaning.

Objective: Students will read words with prefixes un-, re-, and pre-, and explain how these prefixes change the meaning of base words.
    45 minutes
  4. 4

    More Prefixes: dis-, mis-, non-

Learn to read words with additional prefixes for negation and opposition.

Objective: Students will read words with prefixes dis-, mis-, and non-, and explain how these prefixes affect word meaning.
    45 minutes
  5. 5

    Suffix Spelling Rules

Learn spelling rules for adding suffixes: doubling consonants and dropping silent e.

Objective: Students will apply spelling rules (doubling, drop-e, change y to i) when reading and writing words with suffixes.
    45 minutes
  6. 6

    Multi-Syllable Decoding

Use syllabication and morphology strategies to decode longer words with multiple syllables.

Objective: Students will apply syllabication strategies (finding prefixes/suffixes, compound word parts, and VC/CV division) to decode multisyllable words accurately.
    45 minutes
  7. 7

    Word Parts for Meaning

Learn to use morphology (word parts) to determine word meaning, connecting decoding skills to vocabulary and comprehension.

Objective: Students will use morphemic analysis (identifying prefix + base + suffix) to decode unfamiliar words AND predict their meanings, then verify predictions using context.
    45 minutes
  8. 8

    Review and Application

Consolidate all PH-6 morphology skills through complex word analysis, mixed practice, and connected text reading.

Objective: Students will decode complex words using morphological analysis, apply spelling rules, derive word meaning from parts, identify and self-correct errors, and read connected text with multisyllabic vocabulary fluently.
    45 minutes
