Understanding Syllables
Learn what syllables are, how to count them, and why they help us read longer words.
Objective: Students will understand that syllables are word parts with one vowel sound, count syllables in words, and recognize that breaking words into syllables helps decode longer words.45 minutes - 2
Closed Syllables
Learn to identify closed syllables - syllables that end in a consonant and have a short vowel sound.
Objective: Students will identify closed syllables (consonant at end, short vowel sound) and apply this knowledge to decode multisyllabic words.45 minutes - 3
Open Syllables
Learn to identify open syllables - syllables that end in a vowel and have a long vowel sound.
Objective: Students will identify open syllables (vowel at end, long vowel sound) and contrast them with closed syllables to decode multisyllabic words.45 minutes - 4
Vowel-Consonant-e (VCe) Syllables
Learn to identify VCe syllables (silent e syllables) where the vowel says its long sound.
Objective: Students will identify VCe syllables (vowel-consonant-silent e) and apply the 'silent e makes vowel long' rule to decode multisyllabic words.45 minutes - 5
Vowel Team Syllables
Learn to identify vowel team syllables - syllables containing vowel pairs that work together to make one sound.
Objective: Students will identify vowel team syllables containing vowel pairs (ai, ay, ea, ee, oa, ow, etc.) and apply vowel team knowledge to decode multisyllabic words.45 minutes - 6
R-Controlled Syllables
Learn to identify r-controlled syllables - syllables where the vowel is followed by r and makes a special sound.
Objective: Students will identify r-controlled syllables (ar, or, er, ir, ur) and apply r-controlled vowel knowledge to decode multisyllabic words.45 minutes - 7
Consonant-le Syllables
Learn to identify consonant-le syllables - the final syllable type where a consonant + le makes the /ul/ sound.
Objective: Students will identify consonant-le syllables (-ble, -tle, -ple, etc.) and apply the rule of counting back three letters to divide words with this pattern.45 minutes - 8
Mastering Multisyllabic Words: All Six Syllable Types
Apply knowledge of all six syllable types to decode any multisyllabic word with fluency.
Objective: Students will fluently apply all six syllable types (closed, open, VCe, vowel team, r-controlled, consonant-le) to decode multisyllabic words in connected text.45 minutes
