    Learn to identify and answer questions about key details using who, what, where, and when.

    Objective: Students will identify and answer questions about key details (who, what, where, when) in a text by returning to the text to find evidence.

    Who and Where? - Identifying Characters and Setting

    Learn to identify characters (who the story is about) and setting (where and when the story happens).

    Objective: Students will identify characters and settings in stories, describing who the story is about and where/when it takes place.

    Beginning, Middle, End - Sequence of Events

    Learn to identify and describe the sequence of events in a story using beginning, middle, and end.

    Objective: Students will identify major events in the beginning, middle, and end of a story, using sequence words to describe the order of events.

    What Is It About? - Main Idea Introduction

    Learn to identify the main idea - what a text is mostly about.

    Objective: Students will identify what a text is mostly about (main idea) by distinguishing the main idea from supporting details.

    Supporting Details - Details That Explain the Main Idea

    Learn to identify supporting details that explain and support the main idea.

    Objective: Students will identify 2-3 supporting details that explain and support the main idea, distinguishing relevant details from unrelated information.

    Retelling Stories - Summarizing in Your Own Words

    Learn to retell stories including characters, setting, and major events in sequence.

    Objective: Students will retell a story in their own words, including the characters, setting, and major events in order (beginning, middle, end), using the Somebody-Wanted-But-So-Then framework.

    Making Connections - Text to Self Connections

    Learn to connect events and characters in text to personal experiences to deepen understanding.

    Objective: Students will make meaningful text-to-self connections by relating characters, events, and feelings in a text to their own personal experiences, and explain how those connections help them understand the text better.

    Review and Application - Comprehension Practice

    Apply all RC-1 comprehension skills to new texts through mixed practice, student choice of strategies, and checkpoint preparation.

    Objective: Students will demonstrate mastery of all RC-1 comprehension skills by applying them to varied texts, choosing appropriate strategies independently, and preparing for the level checkpoint.
