Finding similarities and differences - understanding how authors organize information by comparison.

Sequence and Chronological Order
Understanding events in order - how authors organize information by time or steps.
Objective: Students will identify sequence and chronological order in texts, use timeline graphic organizers, and recognize signal words that indicate time order.45 minutes - 6
Description Structure
Understanding descriptive organization - how authors paint a picture with words by telling about a topic using details.
Objective: Students will identify description structure in texts and use web/cluster graphic organizers to organize descriptive details around a central topic.45 minutes - 7
Signal Words
Using clue words to identify text structure - learning to recognize signal words as reliable indicators of how a text is organized.
Objective: Students will use signal words to identify text structure by recognizing clue words associated with each organizational pattern and applying this strategy when structure is unclear.45 minutes - 8
Review and Application
Comprehensive review of all six text structures with mixed practice identifying structure in unfamiliar passages.
Objective: Students will identify all six text structures (problem/solution, cause/effect, compare/contrast, sequence, description, and mixed structures) in unfamiliar passages and explain how recognizing structure improves comprehension.45 minutes
