    Introduction to vocabulary learning - understanding that unfamiliar words have meanings we can figure out using strategies.

    Objective: Students will understand that unfamiliar words have meanings that can be figured out, and develop curiosity about learning new words.

    Picture Clues

    Using illustrations, photographs, and visual features to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.

    Objective: Students will use pictures and illustrations as clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.

    Context Clues: Definition

    Using context clues when the text directly provides the meaning of an unfamiliar word.

    Objective: Students will identify and use definition context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words when the text directly tells the meaning.

    Context Clues: Examples

    Using context clues when examples in the text reveal the meaning of an unfamiliar word.

    Objective: Students will use example context clues to determine word meanings when the text provides examples that reveal the category or concept.

    Word Parts: Prefixes

    Using common prefixes (un- and re-) to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.

    Objective: Students will use the prefixes un- (meaning 'not') and re- (meaning 'again') to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words by combining prefix meaning with base word meaning.

    Word Parts: Suffixes

    Using common suffixes (-er, -est, -ly) to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.

    Objective: Students will use the suffixes -er (comparing two), -est (comparing three or more), and -ly (how something is done) to determine word meanings.

    Multiple Meaning Words

    Learn that some words have more than one meaning and use context clues to figure out which meaning fits.

    Objective: Students will identify that some words have more than one meaning and use context clues in a sentence to determine which meaning makes sense.

    Review and Application

    Apply all vocabulary strategies flexibly - picture clues, context clues, word parts, and multiple meanings. Good readers try multiple strategies and ask: Does my guess make sense?

    Objective: Students will apply multiple vocabulary strategies flexibly to determine word meanings, selecting the best strategy for each situation and checking if their guesses make sense.
